Recommended Course Selections For College-Bound Students

If you are thinking about continuing your education at a 2 or 4-year college, these are some recommendations as to which courses you should take while in high school.  It is always best to take a college preparatory curriculum.  Whenever possible, take the highest level of a course which is offered at your school, such as AP or honors.

  • English
    • You are REQUIRED to take 4 years of English
  • Social Studies
    • It is best to take 4 years of social studies, which is usually required.  You can always take additional social studies.  Example:
      • Cultures
      • Sociology
      • Psychology
  • Foreign Language
    • Most colleges will look to see that you have taken at least 2 years of a foreign language, but some colleges require 3 years.  Take any language you are interested in learning.
  • Science
    • It is best to take 4 years of science, although 3 years may be adequate.
      • Earth & Space Science
      • Biology
      • Chemistry
      • Physics
    • Alternatives are:  Environmental Science, Anatomy, and Physiology
  • Math
    • It is best to take 4 years of college preparatory math, regardless of intended major.
      • Algebra I
      • Algebra II
      • Geometry
      • Trigonometry
      • Calculus
  • Electives
  • It is best to take electives that are also college preparatory or interest oriented.  Do not take only the "easy" classes in order to increase your GPA.
    Suggestions are:
    • Computer Courses
    • Journalism
    • Additional Social Studies (as listed above)
  • Remember to do your best all 4 years of high school.  Colleges will look at each year, not just your junior year.  Study and earn the best grades possible.  Good luck and enjoy high school.
