Psychiatric Rehabilitation Certificate
This 15-credit certificate is open to all Shippensburg University students, including non-degree students. Completion of the certificate will prepare students for careers as frontline workers in psychiatric rehabilitation-related agencies (agencies serving individuals with serious mental illness through programming such as supported housing, supported employment, psychiatric day programming, case management, and peer support).
What Will I Learn?
Students who complete this certificate will learn about the symptoms and experiences associated with serious mental illness and will develop basic entry-level helping skills for provision of frontline supportive services. Students will gain an understanding of the general principles and activities of evidence-based psychiatric rehabilitation programming and will learn about career options in the field of psychiatric rehabilitation.
This is a collaborative program between the departments of Psychology and Social Work. Please contact the Psychology or Social Work departments directly if you are interested in a specific major.
What Types of Careers Could I Get With This Degree?
Completion of this certificate program could lead to entry-level careers in programs designed to support individuals experiencing serious and persistent mental illness. Possible career titles include residential support staff, residential counselor, social rehabilitation specialist, employment specialist, direct care professional, peer supporter, psychiatric technician, mental health worker, and case manager.
What Kinds of Experiences Could I Have?
Students will gain knowledge and skills in small classes taught by faculty members who have professional experience in the field. They will engage in experiential learning activities such as role plays, strengths-based service planning exercises, community service-learning projects, and internships.
