Human Resource Management Minor

The Human Resource Management Minor will provide students with comprehensive course work in the field of Human resources (HR). This eighteen-credit minor consists of five required courses and one elective course designed to prepare non-business majors with the academic work to pursue an entry level professional job in the field of Human Resources. The Human Resource Management minor provides a credential from an American Association of Colleges and Schools of Business accredited college enabling students with other majors to demonstrate competency and preparedness in the field of HR. It is only available to students not enrolled as a major in a business discipline seeking a BSBA.

What Will I Learn?

The people aspect of business is a growing field both in employment opportunities and in salaries. The goals of this field are to best use human resources to achieve strategic organization objectives while accomplishing individual goals. Human resource management encompasses personnel, labor and industrial relations, compensation and benefits, training and development, and legal issues. You’ll have the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills in job analysis, human resource planning, recruiting, interviewing, training and development, law, labor relations, and continuous improvement.

What Types of Careers Could I Get With This Degree?

Graduates of the program begin their careers in the human resource departments of corporations, government agencies, unions, and other private and public organizations. They are employed as interviewers, recruiters, job analysts, grievance and arbitration specialists, negotiators, compensation specialists, safety directors, and training coordinators.

Shippensburg University has an active and vibrant student chapter of the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) that participates in events and competitions which enhance knowledge and provide networking opportunities. Many other experiential learning activities are embedded in the classes students take for this program, giving you the opportunity to build practical skills in a hands-on, interactive environment. Students are also encouraged to pursue internship opportunities with the many regional and national employers that hire our students for meaningful work roles that help build your resume and give you a strong foundation to launch your career in this exciting field.
