Bike Share Program

Bike Share is now open!

Shippensburg University offers a free bike share program to the campus community.  

Centrally located in the Cumberland Valley on a 210-acre campus, there are countless places to bike at Shippensburg University and in the region. Bike to class, explore downtown Shippensburg, or enjoy the Cumberland Valley Rail Trail, which extends from campus about 13 miles north past Newville. Off campus, discover trails in more than 250,000 acres of state parks and forests.  We welcome bicyclists of all skill levels on campus and strive to provide you with access to a bike friendly campus! 

 

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR BIKE USE?

Current Shippensburg University students, faculty, and staff. Student eligibility may vary pending current enrollment status.  

 

HOW DO I CHECK OUT A BIKE?

Visit the ShipRec entrance desk during building operational hours. Presentation of Shippensburg University ID is required.  Bike users must sign a waiver and SU ID will be held during the period of bike use.  The bike user will receive a key for the bike lock.  User should carry lock and key during bike use.

 

HOW LONG MAY A BIKE BE USED?
Bikes may be checked out for up to five hours during ShipRec operational hours. Bikes must be returned at least 30 minutes before closing.  Bikes are not available for check-out within one hour of ShipRec closing.

 

AVAILABILITY

There are a limited number of bikes for rental, and availability cannot be guaranteed.  Availability varies based on time of year, weather, and ShipRec operational hours.  

 

WEATHER

Bike rentals may be stopped in anticipation of inclement weather.  It is recommended that all riders check the local weather forecast before heading out for a ride, and to continue monitoring weather conditions during a ride if inclement weather approaches.

BIKE REPAIR STATIONS:

Bike repair stations are available on campus to assist with all of your personal bike repair needs!   These stations are found in three locations on campus: 

ShipRec, Student Rec Complex Hockey Rink, Naugle hall, and Harley Hall.  

BICYCLE SAFETY FOR BICYCLISTS: 

Be Prepared

  • Wear protective equipment and reflective clothing
  • Bring your cell phone for emergencies
  • Carry drinks and snacks for energy
  • Plan your route

Know The Laws

  • Ride with the flow of traffic
  • Obey traffic laws, street signs, and road markings
  • Yield to traffic when appropriate
  • Use a front light and reflectors at night

Be Predictable

  • Signal and announce your moves to others
  • Stay alert and make sure your path is clear
  • Slow down and look for pedestrians and vehicles

BICYCLE SAFETY FOR MOTORISTS: 

Know The Laws

  • Allow 4 feet of distance between a vehicle and an adjacent bicycle
  • Pass cyclists with care and at a safe speed
  • Yield to cyclists as you would motorists
  • Obey traffic laws, street signs, and road markings

Use Precaution

  • Open a vehicle door only after ensuring the area is clear and it is safe to do so
  • Avoid passing bicycles at an intersection
  • Search for bicycles before turning right, parking, while at a stop sign or signal, or driving in reverse
  • Understand and recognize cyclists’ hand signals
