Steps to Become a Teacher

In 1939, Shippensburg State Teachers College became the first teachers college in Pennsylvania and the fourth in the United States to be accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and (Secondary) Schools.  Today, Shippensburg University continues the deep rooted tradition of preparing exceptional teachers.

The College of Education and Human Services proudly offers a Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) approved and nationally accredited Teacher Preparation Program.  It is the responsibility of this program to ensure that all Candidates remain on track to meet the requirements of their program and ultimately are eligible for licensure upon program completion.

The Teacher Preparation Program is framed by the many rules regulated by PDE to ensure our educators are prepared, competent, and confident.

Congratulations!  You've chosen to become an educator.  Whether your journey to Shippensburg University has been long or short, traditional or non-traditional, know that the faculty and staff in the College of Education and Human Services (COEHS) are excited to help you navigate through the process.

What's next?

The journey to licensure can be confusing, and you may find yourself asking "what's next?".  Please know you're not alone!  Your advisor will be the best point of contact for any/all questions; however, any faculty or staff member would be happy to help as best they can.  Or, at the very least, point you in the right direction.

Talk to your Advisor!

Your Advisor is there to help you make the most of your college experience.  Talk to them frequently and honestly about any questions or concerns you have with your academic progression.  Your advisors name and contact information can be found in the myShip portal (Student Tab, My Academics, My Profile).  As a final resort you can also obtain this information from any department secretary.

Where do I begin?
