The Department of Mathematics at Shippensburg University is a dynamic group of students, faculty, and staff, committed to the study and advancement of mathematics and mathematics teaching. We are 14 full-time faculty members and over 100 majors pursuing mathematics degrees. At Shippensburg, students may pursue a general mathematics program or choose to specialize with a concentration in applied mathematics, secondary education, or statistics. Our classrooms are equipped with a variety of technological resources, and the faculty integrate technology training throughout the curriculum.

Current faculty research interests are diverse and include algebra, logic, combinatorics, applied mathematics, statistics, analysis, and mathematics education. Our faculty members are actively involved in undergraduate research, the development of curriculum and educational materials, interdisciplinary research, community K-12 initiatives, and regional and national professional organizations.

How do I get an override to register for a math course?

Fill out this Override Request Form. The math department chair reviews all requests and places people as resources permit.

Student Learning Outcomes

Students will demonstrate the ability to write direct proofs.
Students will demonstrate an understanding of calculus concepts from four perspectives – numerical, graphical, symbolic, and in the context of applications.
Students will use appropriate computer-based technology to assist in solving problems.
Students will participate in discipline-specific extra-curricular activities, such as department seminars, mathematics conferences, undergraduate research, etc.
Students will be exposed to an awareness of mathematics as an abstract discipline and as a tool for solving problems in common application areas.
Students will demonstrate the ability to understand the logical structure of mathematical statements and abstract definitions.
Students will communicate mathematics verbally or in writing.
Students will work collaboratively to solve mathematical problems.
