Academics discuss origins of Israel-Palestine conflict
"A panel was held Thursday, Nov. 9 on the historical and political factors behind the current Israel-Palestine conflict in Gaza that began last month. The discussion’s four speakers were professor Mireille Rebeiz, professor Robert Shaffer, professor Brian Ulrich and professor David Weaver. Each speaker comes from an academic background that focuses on history, culture or politics, especially relating to Middle Eastern affairs. Ezra Epperly Receives Gilman Scholarship
Senior International Studies major Ezra Epperly is studying at Soonchunhyang University in Sinchang, South Korea. Epperly got this opportunity after she was advised to apply for the prestigious Gilman Scholarship which she ended up receiving. Epperly stated that she is proud of herself for taking the chance to be able to study at her dream location of South Korea.
Erika Otthofer ’20 named a Fulbright finalist
Erika Otthofer (B.A. 2020 in International Studies and Political Science) has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) in Argentina for the 2022-2023 academic year. In March 2023 Otthofer will head to Argentina where she will assist with mentoring and instructing English teachers-in-training at a regional university. Otthofer is Ship’s seventh student/alumna to receive a Fulbright through the US Student Program since 2013, making Ship the State System leader in Fulbright student grants.

Sophomore Rangeline DeJesus was appointed to the Shippensburg University Council of Trustees by Governor Tom Wolf. DeJesus will represent her peers as the student member of the council. DeJesus is a sophomore International Studies and Spanish major with a minor in Political Science. An active member of the campus community, she is a Resident Assistant and also serves as an International Studies Ambassador.

Six years in the making, a village on a small, remote island in Haiti now has access to quality medical care thanks to the efforts of Global Languages & Cultures and International Studies faculty—the late Agnes Ragone and Blandine Mitaut—and their students. In spring 2020, their service-learning project opened a fully staffed medical clinic in Gros-Mangles, Haiti bringing the dream of the Gros Mangles and Shippensburg communities to reality.

Isabel Weaver, an international studies major, was awarded a prestigious Freeman-Asia scholarship to study abroad in China during the spring 2020 semester. She has decline the award because her study abroad plans have been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She will be reapplying in Spring 2021. We wish her luck with the new application and future study in China.
