English Programs

Graduating with a degree in English enables students to engage in careers in publishing, journalism, web content writing and design, public relations, teaching, and marketing, among countless others. From small businesses to large corporations; from local newspapers to mass media outlets: with an English major, the job possibilities are endless.

Majors

  • English with Secondary Certification, B.A. - This program prepares you to teach in grades 7-12 in Pennsylvania, as well as more than 40 other states with reciprocal agreements. It is nationally recognized by the National Council of Accreditation for Teacher Education and by the National Council of Teachers of English. It also has the only public elementary lab school in the state.
  • English, Literary Studies, B.A. - This program allows you to not only learn how to analyze literature, but to apply that critical thinking and engagement to life. 
  • English, Professional and Creative Writing Concentration, B.A. - This program uniquely blends creative writing with skills in demand in today’s marketplace. Our faculty include a New York Times best-selling author and a writer recently recognized as a Best American Poet. Combined, our core faculty have published over a dozen books. 

Minors

  • English Minor - The English minor is an extremely flexible program. You choose the classes that interest you most, from great works of literature to professional writing. The minor suits students from a wide variety of disciplines and allows them to pursue their creative and literary interests in ways that will enhance any career.
  • Creative Writing Minor - The creative writing minor is a great complement to practically any major. Studying creative writing at Shippensburg University means becoming a better writer, exploring your imagination and working in small classes taught by published authors.
  • Professional Writing Minor - The professional writing minor suits students looking to become more technically sound in their writing, which translates well in basically any career field.
