Keystone Media Awards
The Slate, Shippensburg University’s student run newspaper, has been recognized by the Slate Keystone Media Awards for many years. The Slate Keystone Media Student Awards recognizes journalistic relevance, integrity, and initiative in student media at both the high school and collegiate levels. Entries are judged by Pennsylvania news editors and collegiate news advisors.
In 2023, The Slate was selected for five awards including First Place for the “2022 Women’s March Gallery” photo story by Allyson Ritchey and Paige Shope. Shope’s review of “Don’t Worry Darling” was also awarded second place.
The Slate’s website, TheSlate.com, was awarded second place, which makes it the third year in a row the website was honored. Monika Lewis’s column “Black in the Classroom: SU and predominately white institutions; The N-Word: The horror and hierarchy of hearing racial slurs in the modern day; Where is the beauty supply store?” was awarded honorable mention. Allyson Ritchey’s featured photo “Black Violin breaks musical boundaries” was also awarded an honorable mention.
The Slate has been awarded more than 20 Slate Keystone Student Media Awards since 2019. Entries are judged based on subject matter, presentation, and effectiveness.
National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Mid-Atlantic Awards
SUTV has won multiple NATAS Mid-Atlantic Student Production Awards throughout the years. The collegiate level Emmys® are awarded by the National Academy of Television Arts and Science Mid-Atlantic Chapter.
In 2022, a team of twelve SUTV students was awarded the Student Production Award in the Live Sporting Event/Game Category. Shippensburg students were judged against multiple universities in the Mid-Atlantic region.
In 2020, SUTV was nominated for the Student Production Award for College/University- Talent. In 2019, SUTV took home the Student Production Award for College/University Student Production Sports-Live Event. They were also nominated for two other broadcasts that year. In 2018, SUTV earned three nominations and won two Student Production Awards.

PRSSA Star Chapter
The PRSSA Star Chapter is the gold standard for PRSSA chapters. This award is available to any chapter in good standing that meets 8 out of 11 chapter requirements. These include participating in Ethics Month activities, strengthening its relationship with its sponsor chapter, and completing community service projects. SU's chapter provides opportunities for hands-on learning through client work, professional development through guest speakers, and networking. PRSSA's signature annual event is a professional networking night for all communication, journalism, and media students.
PRNews 2023 Education A List
The Communication, Journalism and Media Department’s public relations program was recognized by the editorial staff of PRNEWS as one of its 2023 Education A-List programs. The list acknowledges the best institutions of higher education for career advancement in PR and marketing communications.
This recognition was based on a review of our curriculum, faculty, alumni, differentiators that make the program special, the evolution of the program and planned areas of expansion or development among other things. CJM is one of 50 programs on the list nationwide and the only one in PASSHE.
