Accounting is the keystone in the decision-making process in any organization, regardless of size. Referred to as the “language of business,” accounting is a high-demand, high-salaried field. All organizations need accountants.
Graduates from our BSBA-Accounting program can find meaningful employment as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) where they serve the needs of clients; a corporate accountant, serving the accounting needs of an individual business; government or not-for-profit accounting, working to fulfill the accounting requirements of various governments and agencies.
Our accounting degree program meets the educational requirements for you to take the CPA exam. Our graduates are employed in public accounting firms of all sizes. Students wishing to become a CPA would be able to sit for the CPA exam in most states upon completion of the 120-credit bachelor’s degree. It’s important to check the requirements of the State Board of Accountancy where you wish to take the exam. The CPA designation will be finalized upon your completion of 150 credits and one year’s working experience supervised by someone who is a CPA. Our students are able to fulfill this requirement and take the additional 30 credits by completing an MBA at Shippensburg, and we offer an MBA Acc which has a concentration in accounting. After meeting certain qualifications, students are able to make a seamless transition from their BSBA degree to the MBA program.
There are many other accounting areas of practice. You may decide to work in the accounting department of an individual business where you may specialize in internal auditing, cost accounting, tax accounting, or general corporate accounting, to name a few specialties. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and General Accounting Office are just two of the many federal agencies that hire our graduates. State and local governments, hospitals, insurance companies, charitable organizations, schools, and universities all require the services of accountants.
Our BSBA meets the academic requirements of many accounting specialties and their respective professional designations: Certified Management Accountant (CMA); Certified Internal Auditor (CIA); Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE); Enrolled Agent (EA) to practice before the IRS; and many others!
