TurnItIn and D2L

Turnitin provides plagiarism checks for files that your students submit through the Assignments tool in D2L Brightspace. In addition, you can also utilize Turnitin Grademark to annotate and provide feedback directly on the document that is uploaded. You enable this functionality during the setup of an assignment folder using the Turnitin tab. The guides below will show you how to enable Turnitin, and how to utilize the tool in your courses.

How to Enable Turnitin on Assignments

1.  From the course home screen, click Course Admin located in the navbar.

2.  Click Assignments, which is located under the Assessment category.

3.  Click New Submission Folder

4.  Enter a Name for the assignment folder in the field provided.  Note:  For additional information on setting up the assignment folder including all settings under the properties tab and Restrictions tab, please click here to access our guide - Assignments: Creating an Assignment Folder (AKA Dropbox)

5.  Click the Turnitin tab

6.  Check the box to the left of "Enable Grademark for this folder".  Note:  Grademark enables you to grade, annotate, and provide feedback directly on the file.  Although you do not have to use it, you must enable it if you wish to enable the originality check which is the plagiarism function. Once enabled, you do not need to grade using the Grademark feature if you do not wish to.

  • Automatically sync grades as Draft in Brightspace:  Enabling this option will automatically sync the grade that you enter when using the Grademark feature with the grade field in the Evaluate screen.
  • (Default) Manually sync grades ad draft in Brightspace: This option requires that you manually transfer the grade from grademark to the evaluate screen.

7.  Check the box to the left of "Enable Originality Check for this folder".

  • Allow learners to see Turnitin similarity scores in their submission folder:  Enable this option if you want your students to be able to review their turnitin plagiarism report.
  • Automatic originality checking on all submissions:  Leave this option enabled if you want the process to run automatically after the student has submitted their paper.  (This is recommended)
  • Identify individual submissions for originality checking:  Enabling this option will require that you manually initiate this process after the student has submitted the assignment.  This would require that you initiate the process for each individual submission by each student.

8.  Click Save and Close.  You will be able to verify that the folder has turnitin enabled by the icon which appears beside it's name.

Additional Items to Consider

  • By default all papers that are submitted to Turnitin are then saved in the Turnitin database for comparisons in the future.  If you would like to remove this so that submitted papers are checked but not saved in the database then you can do so by editing the submission folder and returning to the turnitin tab.  Click More Options in Turnitin and then select Optional Settings.  Here you can click "Standard paper repository" and choose the option "Do not store the submitted paper".

    • A possible scenario when this would be handy would be if you were asking students to submit multiple drafts of a single paper.  You may want their drafts to be checked for plagiarism but not saved to the repository so that each draft doesn't flag the next.
