The Assignments tool allows you to create an assignment submission folder where your students can submit files to you electronically for grading.

Create An Assignment Submission Folder From Course Admin

[Recommended Method]

1.  Go to the course where you'd like to create the folder.

2.  Click Course Admin in the course navbar.

  •   NOTE:  You can also click Assignments in the Navbar to be taken directly to the Assignments tool.  If this is done you can skip to step 4.

3. Click the Assignment tool link on the Course Administration page.  Note:  You can view the content of this page by either categories or name.  The examples below show from the perspective of view by category.  The area where this can be changed is outlined in the red box below.

4.  Click New Assignment or click the down arrow next to an existing folder to edit it.

5.  Enter a Name for this folder in the field under "Name".  This field is the only required field on the properties tab.  Additional descriptions of settings can be found below.

  • Folder Type:  Select what type of folder you'd like to create - Individual Submission Folder or Group Submission Folder.  To create a group submission folder you will need to have groups setup in your course otherwise this box will be grayed out.  NOTE:  Once the folder is created this field cannot be edited.

    • Individual Submission Folders:  Each student will be able to submit their own file for the assignment.  This is the most common type of submission folder.

    • Group Submission Folders:  Each group member will be able to submit files to the folder and view submissions by their group fellow group members.

  • Category:  You can create categories to help organize your submission folders.

  • Grade Item:  Here you can choose or create a grade item to associate this folder with.

  • Out Of:  This is where you'll enter the amount of points this assignment will be worth.  If you've created a grade item to associate this folder with then it's a good idea to keep this value equal to the max point value you set for the grade item.

  • Student View Preview:  Here you can see what the score would look like to students.  It does require that you enter a value in the "Out Of" field above it.

  • Rubrics:  Here you can add a rubric you've already created or create a new one.

  • Instructions:  Here you can provide instructions to students on what they need to do.

  • Submission Options:  These options may be hidden so make sure to click "show submission options" if they are.

    • Files Allowed Per Submission folder:  Choose unlimited to allow students to submit as many files as they want to this folder or set limit it to only one submission.

    • Submissions:  Here you can designate what happens when students submit files.  You can keep all student submitted files, keep only the most recent submission, or limit them to one submission.

  • Notification Email:  Here you can enter an email address where you'd like to be notified that a student has submitted a file to this folder.

6.  Click the Restrictions tab to setup due and availability dates

  • Due Dates:  Set the due date for the assignment.  This is typically the same as the end date unless you would like to allow students to submit late work.  Students will still be able to submit files past the due date if the End Date is later.  If they do then their submission will be marked late.

  • Start Date:  The start dates dictates when students can begin submitting files.

  • End Date:  The end date dictates when students are no longer able to submit files.  Remember that this should typically be set to the same date as the "Due Date" unless you allow late work, at which point it should be set to sometime after the due date.

7.  Click Save and Close

6.  Click Publish

  • Add Attachments:  Click here to upload a file that is associated with this assignment folder.  Once uploaded, your students will be able to download the file when they navigate to this assignment folder.

  • Availability Restrictions:  Click here to modify the availability for this assignment folder.  The Start Date dictates when students will be able to access the folder.  The End Date dictates when students will no longer be able to access the folder.  The Due Date allows you to set a date prior to the End Date where students can still submit files but their submission will be marked "Late".  Leaving all these dates blank will make the folder available indefinitely.

  • Add a Grade Item:  Click here to add a grade item or create a new grade item to be associated with this assignment folder.

  • Publish/Draft:  Click here to toggle the assignment folder from "Publish" mode to "Draft" mode.  When published students will be able to see the folder in the content area but may not be able to interact with it depending on the availability dates you've set up.  When in Draft mode students will not be able to see the folder in the content area no matter what availability restrictions have been setup.

8.  Click Update.
