D2L Student Orientation - First Steps: SIS and Email
Once you have registered for classes, you are automatically enrolled in those classes on the D2L platform. Each class resides in a course site similar to a web site.
Instructors may or may not use D2L. Your instructor may also choose to open the course to you before the official class start date.
|Logging into D2L
||Shippensburg University has gone to a single sign-on. That means that you will use your SU Email Username and Password to sign into D2L. If you have not obtained this information, please see the instructions below.
In the login box, enter your username (firstname.lastname@example.org) and your password.
D2L Login URL: http://d2l.ship.edu/
Follow the link to navigate to the D2L login page.
Username: Usernames are generally include the first letter of your first and last name followed by a four digit number.
Password: Your initial password is a combination of letters and numbers. Change your password by clicking on this link: https://password.ship.edu/
If you have forgotten your password, click on the "Forgot Password?" link in the D2L login area.

|Logging Out of D2L
|| The logout link is located on the right corner of the red navigation bar. Selecting the logout link will take you back to the Shippensburg University Portal page.
If you are incative for an extended period of time, the system may log you out of D2L. It is important when you are taking an assessment that you save questions are you progress through it.

My Home Page
The My Home Page is the starting part inside the D2L environment. From here, you can set up your profile, edit your preferences and access your courses. News posted by the D2L Campus Administrator is also posted in this area. Access your courses in the My Courses listing.
You have successfully logged into D2L when you see the Shippensburg University logo and Current Semester listed on the page.
Access your courses by clicking on the course link in the My Courses area (also known as a widget).
Once clicked, the link will take you to your Course Home page.
|Setting Your Preferences
The Preferences tool enables you to customize the layout and presentation options for your view in D2L. Preferences in some areas cannot be modified.
Access the Preference Tool
- From the My Home page click on the Preferences link in the My Settings widget.
- Use the tabs across the top of the page to view each panel.
Appearance and Accessibility Tab
Adjusting the font face and font size changes the default font and size of the text. It does not affect images, documents, and other objects such as math equations.
If you are using assistive technology such as a screen reader, we strongly recommend showing secondary windows as pop-ups.
HTML Editor Settings
The HTML editor enables you to enter text and HTML in the system. It has many additional rich text features. If you use assistive technology such as screen readers, some of these features might be difficult to navigate.
Math Display Setting
You can display Math using a Java Applet or inline MathML. We recommend MathML if you are using assistive technology. Check your browser's help for support information.
Students can adjust the appearance of the Discussions area.
Customize the following settings:
- Show the discussion topics lists: Displays the list of topics in a left panel when reading messages.
- Show the preview pane: If message text is not shown, this option will allow students to specify whether to seee the full message in a preview pane at the bottom of the page or see the full message in a secondary window.
- Message List Style: This option lets students show either the message or title of the discussion message on the main page.
- Reply Settings: Allows students to include the original message in a reply.
Allows student to create a signature line that will be placed at the end of every email sent through D2L. Note: Email is received through our campus email system, Outlook.
The Course Home page is the first page of every course. Here you'll find a a calendar (also known as the Schedule) which may display course events, News items (formally Announcements), Updates an area that tells you what you need to do in the course such as read 10 unread discussions and Bookmarks.
